I was born into a godly family, and I can hardly overstate the positive influence of my parents upon me. I recall several periods in my youth during which the realities of the gospel — both the grace and authority of Jesus Christ — pressed heavily upon my heart and mind. One of these times was the summer of 1992 when, at camp, I grew keenly aware of the minimal evidence of saving grace in my life. As this grace became more apparent, I increasingly felt the desire and responsibility to share it with those around me. A year later, again at camp, I became convinced that the Lord was directing me to take the gospel to those who had never heard. By this time, there was nothing I wanted more.
Through college and seminary years, this desire increased as a result of numerous factors. First, I fell in love with Christian biography. I remember reading Commandos for Christ by Bruce Porterfield as a sophomore and wishing desperately that I could quit school, go to the remotest, most primitive people on earth, and spend my life reaching them. But I stuck it out and went on to meet the likes of Jim Elliot, Amy Carmichael, Adoniram Judson, Isobel Kuhn, James Fraser, Hudson Taylor, and John Paton. Another important development was the influence of men like Guenter Salter and Bob Bell, who ignited in me a love of learning and a passion for unpacking the text of Scripture. Through Dr. Salter, I met C. S. Lewis, who taught me the holistic nature of my Christian faith, that all truth is God’s truth, and that no truth may be rightly understood apart from God. Then from Michael Barrett and John Piper, I began to understand something of the infinite depth and beauty of the gospel and that the salvation of souls is a means to the end of God’s glory. These many influences culminated in my relationship with missionary J.D. Crowley, who has demonstrated for me that every true theologian will be a missionary, and that every missionary must be a theologian. Finally, in 2003, the Lord graced me with Bonnie Ruth, whose life exudes the gospel of Christ day in and day out. She is by best friend and the most influential person in my life.
From 2004-2009, I served on the Bible faculty of Northland International University, teaching biblical languages and Old Testament.
