Our Vision
Our “30-Year Plan”
Through numerous conversations with J.D. and Mike, much prayer, and initial surveying, the Lord is directing our minds and hearts to take light to the 92,000 Laotians living in northeastern Cambodia (primarily in Stung Treng, the province just west of J.D., Mike, and Brian). These people are without a gospel witness and are especially entrenched in animism (more about animism on our Dark Reality page). Whereas many other provinces and people groups of Cambodia enjoy the blessing of gospel preaching missionaries, we are unaware of any gospel work taking place among the Laotians.
The northern border of Stung Treng (also Cambodia’s northern border) is the southern border of Laos.
There, approximately 2.6 million ethnic Laotians live under an oppressive communist regime. The few Christians of Laos face constant threat of serious persecution, from both the government and fellow civilians.
So … in very broad terms, with an eye of faith, and a submissive spirit to the Lord’s (re)direction, we lay out our “30-year plan.” It begins with a couple of years of focused language and culture study (Khmer) in Phnom Penh. During this time, we hope to begin making survey trips to Stung Treng province, in part for the purpose of forming good relations with officials and future neighbors. Following our time in Phnom Penh, we will move to Stung Treng and begin focusing on acquiring the Lao language (nearly all of the 92,000 Laotians in Cambodia live in Stung Treng or just across the border in neighboring Ratanakiri province). When our grasp of Lao is sufficient, we will shift our focus from language and culture acquisition to evangelism and church planting. One of our prayers is that some of the Lao converts would be motivated to carry the gospel to their homeland Laos, just a few miles north of Stung Treng province. Should the Lord open Laos to the gospel, we will seriously consider the possibility of moving into Laos ourselves to plant churches and train nationals. Throughout our time in Stung Treng, I also plan to be involved as much as possible in the Ratanakiri Bible school under J.D.’s direction. Ultimately, I pray that the Lord would establish a similar school in Stung Treng after the model of the Ratanakiri school.
